Even Safe Wild Mushrooms Can Make You Sick If...

by BB
(Montpelier, VT, USA)

http://www.mushroom-appreciation.com/

...If you eat them raw. NEVER eat any edible wild mushrooms raw. Always thoroughly cook them.

Some mushrooms, even good edibles, contain elements that can cause stomach upset. Cooking wild mushrooms essentially stabilizes (or chemically changes?) the components that could cause gastric discomfort.

In the early 1960s, my father, using a European mushroom guide, picked and ate some green russula fungi raw, on a salad. He became extremely ill for hours, and was taken to the emergency room where they administered an antidote. He recovered, but for years he avoided wild mushrooms.

His experience points up another proviso: Make sure you have a fairly recent, North American mushroom guide that has clear, detailed photographs. Mushrooms in foreign guidebooks may look the same as American species, but they may be different than those you find here, and possibly inedible or poisonous. Several national and regional mushroom societies are online, so check those sites for recommended field guides. Avoid coffee table books not only due to size, but they're also not necessarily intended as identification guides.

Other things to remember:

- Sometimes some individuals are allergic to perfectly edible wild mushrooms. One person I know of discovered that he is allergic to chanterelles, even though that species is not known to cause any discomfort when consumed. (Exactly the opposite, in fact.)

- On the other hand, there are a few edible mushrooms are known to cause discomfort in some people, even though most people enjoy them without any difficulty. One example is the Honey mushrooms (Armillaria mellea).

- For that reason, when trying a new wild fungus for the first time, only eat a small portion. That way you can see if you have an allergic reaction.

- Another factor to keep in mind is that some mushrooms don't mix well with alcohol consumption. One particular fungus that requires complete avoidance of alcohol is the Shaggy Mane (Coprinus comatus). The risk of stomach upset even lasts for some time after consuming the mushrooms.

With these provisos and a good mushroom expert to confirm your findings - enjoy! Wild mushrooms can provide culinary delights beyond your expectations.

Year 3 Week 13

sent one of my drafts on the results last week to mr. sv and got them back yesterday during our short meeting
and...
this was his feedback -- "the structure was already there, there is nothing wrong with your English but...
most of the statistical results were written statistically instead of biologically... "

alright.. i'll fix everything back.. hopefully the updated ones will be far more satisfying
another draft is scheduled to due in two weeks time, so pray for me pleeeaaaase

honestly, writing is tiring..
any tips for me??

Year 3 Week 8

Autumn term has started this week, yes - freshers are everywhere  and gosh, as  i am trying my hardest not to enter the campus, in the end i ended up there to settle some stuff in the lab and do some preparations for my upcoming conference.. hrmm

no more peace for us the postgrads anymore.. the lab will be crowded again, the parking will be consistently full during working hours, library will be some kind of one-stop-centre for them.. tak suke!

luckily i'm in my final year and i won't be spending much time at school other than meeting the supervisor, attending any talks/seminars/research skills training and demonstrating UG's lab works. so, suke hati korangla nak buat apa2 kat uni tu.. huhu

well, i have started my autumn sampling and the collections are pretty generous, i can say. however, today's news revealing that forecasters warning of snow could possibly hit Britain this October made me shocked a little bit.. i could imagine that my fungal sampling season will be cut off to one-third of the season compared to last year's.. would that results be enough for me to use later? hrmm...

more details on the news, click the link http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2039418/UK-weather-Snow-forecast-parts-Britain-early-October.html

Year 3 Week 3

baru lepas jumpa supervisor

takpe..takpe.. bagila apa pun mr. sv
i'll do it!!!

can't believe i'm in third year! (Year 3 Week 2)

aahh.. i am already in my final year of PhD! I simply can't believe how quickly time is going!
well, i'm not being paranoid here, but at least i can confirm that from today onwards, you might going to see some of my future entries will be emotionally written, depressing, lack of self-worth and full of misery due to the fact that i am almost approaching the end of my PhD studies.. hoho.. hopefully not much of them!

Ramadhan is here, and having 17 hours fasting during the day (it was 19 hrs on the first day then it was reduced to 18 and it will be lesser than that as far as the day goes by, the sun begins to fade earlier and rises later) has so far did not stop me to pursue my everyday student routines.. Alhamdulillah..i still go to my lab to do my pairing experiment (another labwork and i'm done!, insyaAllah) and if i decide to stay at home, i will do some scribblings, reading or writing for my thesis draft. But  somehow, due to the thirst and hunger that started to crumble from afternoon onwards, I have decided to take some nap on the afternoon to ensure that i can start afresh afterwards and keep myself in one piece until Maghrib :)

Lately, i was a bit distracted by some people around me, who are in the same position as mine-  a phd scholar, but have left their studyplace and went back to Malaysia without completing their doctorate. i know all of them have come to a position where their study leave (that includes extension) has come to an end, and whether they like it or not, they have to go back and starts their duty as an academic officer in their own workplace without phd scroll in hands. it makes me scared at some point. I don't want to end up like them. i want to have my thesis done over here then head straight to viva and after that go back home as a proud person. This situation has made me thinking of the way i'm currently handling my research. I can't deny myself that at some point, i can be easily attracted to do other things (non-academic staff, of-course) without realising there are still lots of works to complete and deadlines to catch and in the end i ended up forcing myself to the max to complete the task and the results weren't up to the expectations, which were a total shame. After doing some me-reflections lately , i can assure you that i am now fully aware of my priority and i will try to keep away any 'godaan' that comes while i'm working on my thesis.. insyaAllah.. i have recently made my 'Ramadhan Study Schedules' to be followed throughout this holy month as my productive times in a day are randomly spread over due to fasting activity. this is my first attempt to work on serious schedule (bila dah masuk final year semua dah jadi serius..haha) and i don't know whether it could work wonders for me, but let see how it goes later, ok?

"semoga Ramadhan kali ini memberi keberkatan dari segi ibadah dan juga memberi kekuatan kepada diri ini untuk belajar bersungguh-sungguh..Amin"

Wahai hati, tabahlah...
kuatkan semangat, teruskan perjuangan

Random Ramblings (Year 2 Week 48)

ohmaigod, this year has produced so many PhD graduates and PhD scholars-soon-to-be graduating in my department (in Malaysia, of course!)
you guys might not see my thrilled facial reaction, but all i can say is " I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU GUYS!!" really!!

although most of them are lecturers which i always had this cliche taught in my mind that "diorang kan lecturers, mesti lagi terrer, banyak pengalaman mengajar, banyak ilmu, banyak writing, banyak produce paper, mesti senang nak dapat phd", i really don't want to think that way anymore.. i know i can do it.. i just want to show to everybody that i can do the same as them..

mampukah saya menjadi tutor pertama dalam department dapat phd? tak kot, sebab ada yang nak abis dah tahun ni... ehehe... tak dapat yang pertama, dapat jadi doktor paling muda pun bolehla...hikhik!

Meeting UMT delegates @ Malaysia Hall - Year 2 Week 46

oh.. only saw 3/4 of my face..but who cares!?

Salam and hi all.. I was so happy to meet everybody at Malaysia Hall last week.. it was like i've known them for ages, but i'd only met them yesterday! probably the ties between us (working under the same roof made us eager to know everybody!) :))
there were familiar faces and people that i've known before i came to the UK and some that i've met while FBing and BLOGging.. there were also newcomers whom had just arrived for their study.. welcome aboard guys! :)

the event started at 12 noon with lunch for an hour.. lauk semua ala2 masakan terengganu, after lunch we went for Dzuhr prayer next door.. and later the meeting began at 2pm. The meeting started with doa recital and later followed by greeting speech from the Director of MSD, Prof. Madya Dr. Rosman Abdullah. Based from what i can conclude from his speech was the main factor that contribute the issues of Malaysia PhD scholars in the UK-Eire was the family matters; either they couldn't balanced their family and study life or too busy on one side compared to another..and as the student representative in the UK, he and his team welcomes any students who have issues with their supervisor or anything with regards to their study matters. He added that most students came to address their problems once they were already in critical stage to solve, therefore he advised all of us to come as sooner as we can once we  could detect something is not right somewhere along the study process..

next was Prof. Aziz's (VC of UMT) turn to give his speech and he has came out with several facts about the number of successful PhD scholars in a yearly basis ever since 2007 and not to mentioned,  number of failed scholars which i could say a shock fact really..never expect that it could turn out that way.. but girl, you have to admit it, in reality, things happen in between and do not always go as we planned..  well.whatever it is, to avoid any troubles, i will definitely work even harder (and smarter!) and pray to Allah for His blessings so that all  my work will pay off at the end of the day..

after two speeches, we went for an ice-breaking session and after introducing ourselves, we have to inform the delegates about our current status; sort of what stage we are dealing now, either writing or in ongoing experiment and the plans in the near future. we were also asked by the VC if there are any issues with supervisor or anyone and so far i don't have any.. phew! but there were students have bravely stand up and share their problems with us and i could say that i am fortunate enough not to have big problems like them..Alhamdulillah.. mudah-mudahan study saya ni berjalan lancar.Amin!

The meeting ended at 5pm and lepas bersalaman dengan everybody, i was getting ready to go back to Egham. but before that, singgah dekat kantin Malaysia Hall beli makanan panas untuk suami tersayang.. :) well, that was it.. overall i am so happy that our VC and other UMT delegates have made an effort to come here to talk, advise and motivate us.. it definitely shows that you care about us.. :)

Year 2 Week 46

Assalamualaikum and hi!

it is summer, but the funny thing is most of the days in a week are forecasted to be raining, and they are!
not good for us to enjoy walking and travelling, but ideally fit for my study..yes...
this year's spring has not provide me much results, in fact i didn't find any species that i was looking for! sebab tu looking for alternative like starting to write for my thesis
my sv also worried about me not getting any results but "you could pray for next spring (in 2012) to be wet enough for mushroom to grow" he said

praise to the Almighty, recent non-stop rain have given me a chance to do my work! i went to my field site yesterday and luckily managed to collect 2 specimens, not much but i am glad that there's a progress.. i will definitely look for another this weekend.. syukran ya Allah! well, as the sampling work has already began, i may have to prepare my medium to have my specimens cultured.. good luck to me! :))

i've submitted a few pages of my writings for the 2nd chapter last week and they have been handed over to me this morning.. first draft kan, mana boleh paper tu clean and clear je.. hehe.. selagi ada blank space selagi tu my sv will try to write comments and points to be edited.. i am not geram, but more to feel like wanting to do my best for the next draft ..postive vibes, i know!

looking at my graduation ticker at the upright sidebar, it is almost the time to reach my final year! wow..time flies so fast! and i am not even 26 yet.. (naah.. coming soon!) :)
before new semester begin this September, i am going to attend my 2nd review meeting with my supervisor and advisor
this time it won't be like last year's.. butterfly-in-the-stomach-and-feel-like-to-vomit kinda situation will apparently not going to happen this time..haha.. my sv cakap this time, it will be a kind of leisure-chatting-with-a-cup-of-coffee meeting which like a melody to my ears! hope it happens that way on the day itself..insyaAllah

just to let you know, i am going to Malaysia Hall tomorrow to meet most of my UMT collegues who have been in the same postion as mine (doing PhD) in the southern parts of the UK! i am so excited for this and as the UMT Vice Chancelor is coming to this event too, we can share our progress and discuss any issues and also makan-makan! haha..
i will definitely update about this later..

wow.. i wrote a lot for this entry!.. i wish i could do the same for my thesis.. kekeke.. will try my best as always..

Fungi Poems.. cool!

Grabbed from http://www.poemcatcher.com/

Have fun reading!

AN ODE TO THE MUSHROOM

Molecules flow through space
ebbing and eddying
a single cell forms into life
touching another, making love
cellular strings lace outwards
forking, branching, frolicking
mosaics of networks emerge
a model of life surges
finds home on land
on this blue planet
the network is mycelium
rejoices in creation
in elegance and grace, to form
a mushroom
the universe smiles

By Paul Stamets

The fungal thread of death

It was a damp summer
all the gutters leaked
into my mansion
Rotten plaster and window frames
The fungal thread of death.
I played squash like a maniac
Every week. The showers
were humid and smelt quite bad.
My feet too. Smelly trainers.
The fungal thread of death.
I went organic. Green spuds
and tomatoes too. Chemical free.
By August they were all black and putrid
The fungal thread of death.
I printed this poem
on high grade handmade paper.
The sweetest cellulose. Quite soon
It was spotty and almost gone.
The fungal thread of death.

By John Lucas

PLAYFUL BOYS – By Elizabeth Sheedy

Oh playful boys of the forested groves
With caps all alone or fruiting in droves
All colours from browns to bright blues and red
Beneath are the searching, invisible threads
Connecting all plant in the life and death plan
Continue, caring not for endeavours of man

MUSCARIA IN MIND – by Ted Tuddenham

To find the sacred mushroom
on the trail,
The ‘shroom of shaman,
priest and fairy tale
To seek and spot the red
topped Amanita
And then, oh joy
To pick and eat her

THE FOREST’S FLOORS By Luke Heaton

Creeping, seeping, spitting spores
Fungi link the forest’s floors
Living fountains, shifting webs,
Feed the living, eat the dead.

GROWING THE ART OF YOUR SCIENCE

To the scientist who fears

the world of art so strange
I share with you the doubt
That e’re the two shall twain

Together? be these worlds
Together? where to start?
Together? doubt our minds
Can mix a science and art

You know not of the rhythm
The meter or the form
for words to blend to meaning
for poems to write and dawn

I know not of the science
The technics of the lab
Pharmaceutics or genetics
the latest Myco fad

Yet here we are together
In Scotlands castle zone
a city proud of literature
UNESCO’s writing home

So we call on Ye who visit
With science on the mind
Welcome to this city
We hope you find the time

to wander to the castle
botanics and the seat
Where Arthur’s names’ interred
where people walk and greet

We hope you meet your nemesis
in challenge ye shall grow
We hope you taste the Whisky
with dram in ye to flow

We hope you learn of fungus
more than you ever dreamed
We hope you write a poem
to tell us what you’ve seen

So Grow your art of science
And teach us through your words
of mycologic meaning
mixed with poetic prose

still in Year 2 Week 35

i found one of this useful blog entry from HERE regarding tips on critical reading and how to extract ideas from the literature review.
i hope with those tips, i could enhance my style of writing and improve my confidence to complete every chapters on the expected time.. insyaAllah

QUESTION: I still haven't got the grip to do critical reading and to extract the main idea from the literature review. Does anyone have any notes or tips to share. I could really use some help here

ANSWERS:

Friend 1
I suggest you look at all journals related to your topic. preferably less than 2-3 years old. if your case study is in malaysia maybe you should look at any previous journal related regardless of when it published related to your intended research.
If you have more time you can go through the list of thesis available in British Library athttp://ethos.bl.uk/Home.do just register and search for related topic. Lastly off course the books related to your topic (according to some people books maybe contain outdated information, but it is still very useful to understand the topic and theoretical perspective.
If you have done the above, what you need to do is to justify nobody have done the topic you choose (although at this stage is sill premature to say that) and how the research fill the gap of knowledge. Important to remember the 'originality' and 'contribution to knowledge' term all the time.
The book that I read about doing literature review suggest dont read the whole book at one go. so just read the intro and maybe the conclusion if needed. So you could identify the author(s) idea or contribution. After that you can transfer the info into table and compare with other authors ideas. important to identify the 'keys' books or journals for your thesis as you can begin the argument from there. Hopefully this will help you to do your proposal. Although it easier to say than actually do it.

Friend 2
....what my supervisor said, read best journal at least 2-3 years back and pick 3 main keyword that similar to our topic..( 5-6 journals would be ok...to just find a gap) by that we may not go too far..and end up reads piles of journals that's might be outdated..on the other hand we do need to read and digest all those journals, but later, after we find the grips and know how to go about in our topic...

Friend 3
Another suggestion for latest book always check with Amazon.co.uk as I always check the latest plus the future books for publication until 2011 (title not release yet but could give you ideas what coming up in the near future). Google Books also good but too much time consuming because they provide you with the selected content of the book and where to buy. But I always used that information to borrow books from our library or British Library. For journals please refer to Google Scholar and used your library on-line journal access to get the copy.

Friend 4
.....While journals may give you recent information on methods or empirical case stud(ies) , I find books are still the best sources for some concepts, theories and frameworks especially when they are authored by the big names in your research area. And some (especially the recent ones) are very helpful in giving hints for future research direction as well.
What I do is tabulating the suggestions for future research which i picked from my readings (both from books and journals). After some time you can easily identify what sort of issues that are not being attended to yet. And i guess, that's when you can identify the research gaps easily as you will notice a certain trend.

Friend 5
......as you may know by now, firming your idea on the topic and doing the literature review is one of the hardest part of the whole journey of doing PhD. Jangan risau, semua orang melalui pengalaman yang lebih kurang sama. It is a natural process of learning. You are not alone in this!

Friend 6
I am still doing LR, even after more than a year into my candidacy, well, I would rather call it literature survey now. Grappling with the direction in the early stage of studies is normal, as I have experienced.
There are already plenty of advice above that you can very well apply. To add to that is probably to remind you about note taking and EndNotes. You can do annotated bibliography of the key papers that you have read. You can also try organizing your study area into themes that you number them, 1, 2, 3...Prepare a folders for each of them. Take notes into a table, there are many ways.
Mine is like this: on top, you can write the folder number, topic, authors and date. Then the table; you can have 4 columns:1. Page number2. Key words3. Summaries (this is important where you summarize it in your own words)4. Notes (compare, reflect, question, etc, etc).
After some time, you will realize that certain papers/studies are more significant than others, then you may use color dots stickers to differentiate them; maybe in terms of importance.I find that management is crucial besides other stuffs.
Also, don't forget that the LR should:1. summarise the main ideas, issues and debates.2. link these to your research questions, methodology and later, your findings.

Friend 7
.............take those LAST 5 years journals or last 2-3 years ago journals and re-read them (my SV gv me this idea, and kalao boleh get those from TOP ratings journals in yr field)The write... re-write (while closing the original journal, just write what YOU think and what YOU understand, i even write in Malay sebab kekadang idea comes in that format)...and draw diagrams.. sometimes..

Friend 8
................you cannot ignore journals paper. Journal papers have being reviewed by the experts. In addition, journals provide us the "state of the art" for the LR. And...always refer to the list of references (the last page)..the list will link you to another authors and perhaps you will find a very..very..interesting papers....lama2 nanti you will noticed that the same authors works have been cited regularly...so from that kita tahu who are the people (the experts) in our area.the 4 column (as mentioned by mimi) is a good method.
I pun guna that technique. Cuma kena banyak sabar...or else you will be easily give up..keep on digging and reading..after a few months Insyaallah you can categorize your research theme.
Mind Mapping technique is also very helpful..(mcm buat design gak lah)..especially when you get stuck with so many ideas....

Friend 9
..............pasal LR u need to formula ur problem statement, so the next q is where will u get the problems? of course you need to identify the frontier of knowledge & look at the parameter of the scope of ur study from there u will get a picture of ur research topic. Meaning u need to read the journal & articles as much as possible tapi bukan baca semua just appropriate utk ko dapat grasp of the area.

Year 2 Week 35

the result is already there!
waiting to be compiled and to be written as a chapter
go go Akira!

let's start again and finish it all up

Assalamualaikum & hi!
I am back from my holiday and it is time to face the next phase of my PhD study .. and of course this phase would be tougher and stressful too.. i always talk to myself that this is a part of a learning process, i'll be enjoying it as i will gain more and more info when i've started looking for materials for my writings
but deep down inside i couldn't resist myself thinking whether am i prepared enough to go through the process.
the feelings are so mixed up at the moment; nervous, scared and i could feel something is lacking.. ermm..confidence maybe?

i need my strength back! i need to find 'the mood' back!
i will fight for it
Ya Allah, please guide me through this journey~ Amin
